How do I remove the flush valve from a single flush toilet tank for two piece toilet?

For a Two-Piece Toilet
  1. Remove the tank lid
  2. Shut off the water by turning the shut-off valve clockwise

  3. Drain as much water out of the tank as possible by holding the flush lever down until the toilet is completely flushed.
  4. Sponge or toilet out any remaining water in the tank. A shop vac also works well.
  5. Disconnect the water supply or the hose to the tank

  6. Disconnect the Flapper chain from the tank lever arm

  7. Disconnect the refill tube attached to the top of the overflow pipe
  8. Underneath the tank, unscrew the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl. You may need to spray them with some penetrating oil first before trying to loosen them.
  9. Reach in tank with long slotted screw driver to keep tank bolt from turning while loosening nuts under the tank with an adjustable wrench. Remove tank bolts.
  10. Lift the tank off the bowl and set it aside on a towel.
  11. Underneath the tank, remove the tank-to-bowl gasket and unscrew the locknut holding the flush valve to the tank using a plumber’s wrench.  Disconnect the fill valve tube from the flush valve. Remove old flush valve.
  12. Install the new flush valve the same way you removed the old one, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Reconnect the fill valve tube and reinstall the tank-to-bowl gasket.
  13. Once installed, reattach the tank to the bowl with tank bolts.
  14. Reattach the flapper chain to the flush arm
  15. Reattach the fill tube to the overflow pipe
  16. Reconnect the water supply to the tank

  17. Turn on the water, test the new flush valve and check for leaks.
