This article will explain how to remove and replace a flush valve from a single flush toilet tank of a one-piece toilet.
Please note that the images are for reference only. The product shown in this article may differ from yours, but the information below is still relevant.
To remove and replace a flush valve, you must
- Close the shut-off valve and drain out the water in the tank.
- Disconnect the flapper chain and the refill tube.
- Remove the flapper.
- Remove the existing flush valve.
- Replace the new flush valve.
- Reinstall the flapper chain and the refill tube.
- Refill the tank and test for leak and flushing function.
Please note: Before doing any work on your toilet, please shut off the water supply for your toilet.
Once the water is turned off, you are ready to begin.
Step 1 – Close the shut-off valve and drain out the water in the tank
- Shut water off by turning the shut-off valve clockwise
- Drain as much water out as possible by holding the tank lever down until water within the toilet tank is flushed out completely. Use a sponge or a cloth to drain out the remaining water in the tank.
Step 2 - Disconnect the flapper chain and the refill tube
- Disconnect the flapper chain from the tank lever arm
- Disconnect the refill tube from the flush valve overflow tube
Step 3 - Remove the flapper
- Unhook each side of the flapper side ears from the flash valve pegs
Step 4 - Remove the existing flush valve
- With a Philips head screwdriver rotate counter-clockwise to loosen the fastening screw. You will need to rotate about 6 turns to loosen the fastening screw.
- When loosen the fastening screws, the locked claws will also be loosen and will rotate inward and out from the underside wall of the VC opening. If the claws does not rotate out, use your finger to turn it inward to unlock the flush valve from the tank.
- Repeat the same steps above until both claws are loosened and turned inward to allow the flush valve to be removed.
- Remove the flush valve from the tank
Step 5 - Replace the new flush valve
- Open the flapper and with a Philips head screwdriver rotate counter-clockwise to loosen the fastening screw. You will need to rotate about 6 to 10 turns to loosen the fastening screws. Both claws will need to turn inward before the beginning of installation.
- Replace the flush valve inside the tank. Leave sufficient spacing from flush valve pegs to the back wall of the tank.
- Press the flush valve and tighten the fastening screw with a Philips head screwdriver, rotate clockwise. When tightening the fastening screws, the claws should rotate outward, clamp onto the underside wall of the VC opening and lock the flush valve in place inside the tank. The torque to secure the flush valve is less than 144 in. lbs.
Step 6 - Reinstall the flapper chain and the refill tube
- Install the flapper chain onto the hole on the tank lever arm. Ensure the chain is connected properly and check looseness of flapper chain. There should be slight slack in the chain when at rest, and the flapper should open enough when the tank lever is pressed. Verify the seal of flapper on flush valve.
- Reattach the refill tube onto the flush valve overflow tube. Make sure the refill tube adaptor is attached directly into the overflow tube. Flow from the refill tube must be positioned directly into the overflow tube.
Step 7 - Refill the tank and test for leak and flushing function
- Reopen water by turning the shut-off valve counter-clockwise to refill the tank.
- When the tank is refilled, verify if the water is filled to the level at the marked water line at the back wall of the tank. Adjust water level if needed by turning the water level adjustment on the fill valve to move the float cup up or down to increase or reduce the water level in the tank.
- Press the tank lever down to activate the full flushing cycle. Verify if the toilet flushes and refills without issue and the flapper seals well when the flushing cycle is complete.
