Removal and Replacement Instructions of a Diverter Handle for a Tub and Shower with Integral Diverter Model

This article will explain how to remove and replace a diverter handle for a Tub and Shower faucet with an integral diverter on an escutcheon plate.

Please note that the images are for reference only. The product shown in this article may differ from yours, but the information below is still relevant.

To remove and replace the diverter handle, you must:

  1. Remove the volume control handle, the handle trim ring and the escutcheon plate from the valve
  2. Remove the C-clip
  3. Remove the diverter handle
  4. Reinstall the diverter handle and the handle assembly.
  5. Test for leaks and diverter function

Please Note: Before doing any work on your faucet, please shut off the water supply for the faucet.
Once the water is turned off, you are ready to begin.

Step 1 – Remove the volume control handle, the handle trim ring and the escutcheon plate from the valve

The diverter handle is attached to the escutcheon plate. To remove it, you will need to remove the volume control handle, the handle trim ring and the escutcheon plate first.

Depending on your faucet model, the handle removal instructions may be different. See the article "How Do I Remove or Install The Handle For My Faucet?" for detailed instructions.

Once the volume control handle and the handle trim ring are removed, you will be able to remove the escutcheon plate by one of the three methods below:

  • Method 1 - For traditional two screws installation, unscrews the escutcheon screws. Then, pull out the escutcheon plate from the valve.
  • Method 2 - For screwless installation with handle adapter: remove the handle adapter by turning it counter-clockwise. Then, pull out the escutcheon plate from the valve.
  • Method 3 - For screwless installation with screw-on type handle assembly, once the handle assembly is removed by turning the bottom portion of the handle assembly counter-clockwise, pull out the escutcheon plate from the valve.

  • The diverter handle is secure to the escutcheon plate with a C-clip. Use two small, flat-bladed screwdrivers to aid in the removal of the C-clip.

  • On the back of the escutcheon, use one screwdriver blade at one end of the C-clip to keep it from turning and use the other screwdriver blade to push the C-clip end down and out of the groove.

  • With C-clip removed, be careful to retain the rubber O-ring and metal washer which were under the C-clip.

Step 3 – Remove the diverter handle
  • Remove the diverter handle and retain the small black plastic washer which is found on the handle.

Step 4 - Reinstall the diverter handle and the handle assembly

Reverse the previous steps to reinstall the diverter handle, the C-clip, the escutcheon plate, the handle trim, and the shower volume control handle.

See the article on "How to install Gerber shower handle trim escutcheon plate?" and "How Do I Remove or Install The Handle For My Faucet?" for detailed instructions.

Step 5 - Test for leaks and diverter function

Once the diverter handle and the handle assembly are reinstalled, turn on the water supply and the faucet on. Let the water run for 10 minutes. Watch closely for any leaks and turn diverter handle to verify diverter function.
